Located just off the West coast of Africa, the beautiful islands of The Republic of Cabo Verde
The Republic of Cabo Verde Is a major element in the history of the Americas. Located approximately 350 miles off of the west coast of continental Africa, Cabo Verde has been a major crossroad of Ocean Commerce during its more than 400 years of history. Its location in the eastern Atlantic, played a major role in the Slave trading activities of Portugal, Spain, France, England and the Americas. A former colony of Portugal, Capeverdeans, led by Almilcar Cabral, fought and won their independence from Portugal in 1975. There are 10 inhabited islands with a population of approximately 400,000 people and almost an equal number living abroad. The Islands are divided in two groups. The Windward group to the north are: Santo Antao, San Vicente, Santa Luzia, Sao Nicolau, Sal, and Boavista. To the south are: Maio, Sao Tiago, Fogo, and Brava. The major population of Capeverdeans living in the United States, live in the southeastern New England in an area between Connecticut to the south, and Boston to the north. There are smaller communities scattered in other areas of the United States. As a second generation American-born Cape Verdean, I am attempting to preserve the culture as I know it, and learn more about the present, and express my observations and experiences through my Art. 15, February, 2002 - Vasco R.
